IRIS APFEL: WHY DO I LOVE HER

It is not just because of her iconic huge black frame, her red lipstick and her super exquisite outfits (or because she’s 94 years old and she is younger than me, somehow…), I love Iris Apfel because she embodies what I think is the true essence of fashion: self expression.

Fashion is not about trends, what’s in, what’s out, sizes, brands and whatever may limit you with boundaries or rules. Fashion is like art and as art, it’s the product of human creativity and genius. You can’t give limits to the pure research of beauty.

Some days ago a brand told me I couldn’t shoot with their clothes on (I wasn’t looking for free items and I wasn’t begging for presents, I would have given the items back to them after the shooting. Just to be precise…) because I’m a size 10/42/S and not a size 0. This is not fashion…
